What is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It typically affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body. Symptoms of TB include a persistent cough, chest pain, fever, night sweats, and weight loss. Treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of tuberculosis (TB) include:

- Persistent cough lasting more than three weeks
- Coughing up blood or sputum
- Chest Pain or discomfort
- Weakness or fatigue
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Chills
- Fever
- Night sweats

What are the causes of Tuberculosis?

The main cause of tuberculosis (TB) is infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also damage other parts of the body. TB is spread through the air when a person with the untreated, active form of the disease coughs, sneezes, or speaks. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected.

What are the treatments for Tuberculosis?

The main treatment for tuberculosis (TB) is a combination of antibiotics taken for 6 to 9 months. The most common antibiotics used to treat TB are isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. Other medications may be added to the treatment regimen depending on the individual's condition. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove infected tissue. In addition to medication, people with TB should get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet, and avoid smoking.

What are the risk factors for Tuberculosis?

1. Living in or visiting a country where TB is common
2. Living or working in a place with poor ventilation
3. Having a weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS, certain cancers, or other conditions
4. Being a child or an older adult
5. Having been recently exposed to someone with active TB
6. Being a healthcare worker or other person who works with the public
7. Having been recently incarcerated
8. Having used intravenous drugs
9. Having had an organ transplant
10. Having had a gastrectomy or other abdominal surgery

Is there a cure/medications for Tuberculosis?

Yes, there are medications available to treat tuberculosis. The most commonly used medications are isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. These medications are usually taken for 6 to 9 months, depending on the severity of the infection. In some cases, additional medications may be prescribed.
