About Onychomatricoma

What is Onychomatricoma?

Onychomatricoma is a rare benign tumor of the nail matrix, which is the area of the nail bed that produces the nail plate. It is characterized by a thickening of the nail plate and a raised, yellowish-brown nodule on the nail bed. It is usually painless and does not cause any other symptoms. Treatment is usually surgical removal of the tumor.

What are the symptoms of Onychomatricoma?

The most common symptom of OnychomatriComa is a raised, firm, dome-shaped lesion on the nail plate. It may be yellow, brown, or in color and may be surrounded by a rim of normal nail. Other symptoms may include pain, tenderness, and swelling of the affected area. In some cases, the lesion may cause the nail to become thickened or distorted.

What are the causes of Onychomatricoma?

Onychomatricoma is a rare nail disorder that is caused by a benign tumor of the nail matrix. The exact cause of onychomatricoma is unknown, but it is believed to be related to genetic factors, trauma, or infection. Other possible causes include hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, and certain medications.

What are the treatments for Onychomatricoma?

The primary treatment for onychomatricoma is surgical excision. This involves removing the entire tumor, including the nail plate and the underlying nail bed. In some cases, a portion of the nail bed may need to be removed as well. After the tumor is removed, the nail plate may need to be reconstructed with a skin graft or other tissue. In some cases, a nail plate may not be able to be reconstructed and the patient may need to wear a prosthetic nail. Other treatments for onychomatricoma include cryotherapy (freezing the tumor with liquid nitrogen), laser therapy, and topical medications.

What are the risk factors for Onychomatricoma?

1. Trauma to the nail
2. Chronic nail biting
3. Fungal nail infections
4. Psoriasis
5. Diabetes
6. Poor circulation
7. Aging
8. Genetic predisposition

Is there a cure/medications for Onychomatricoma?

At this time, there is no known cure for onychomatricoma. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the affected nail and surrounding tissue. In some cases, medications such as topical antifungal creams or oral antifungal medications may be prescribed to help reduce the risk of recurrence.
