What is Herpes, Neonatal?

Neonatal herpes is a rare but serious condition caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is a viral infection that can affect a newborn baby's skin, eyes, mouth, and/or central nervous system. What are the causes of Herpes, Neonatal?

Neonatal herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It is usually transmitted from mother to baby during childbirth, but can also be transmitted through contact with infected skin or mucous membranes, such as during kissing or other close contact with an infected person.

What are the treatments for Herpes, Neonatal?

The treatment for neonatal herpes depends on the severity of the infection. Mild cases may be treated with topical antiviral medications, such as acyclovir ointment. More severe cases may require oral antiviral medications, such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir. In some cases, intravenous antiviral medications may be necessary. In addition, supportive care, such as fluids and nutrition, may be necessary.

Is there a cure/medications for Herpes, Neonatal?

There is no cure for herpes, neonatal. However, antiviral medications can be used to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms. These medications can also reduce the risk of passing the virus to others.
